Name: Daysha Jakanna
Race: Bajoran/cardassian
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Position: Junior science officer, USS Marakesh
archaeology department
Rank: Ensign
Born: Terok Nor, Bajor Orbit
History: One of many dispossessed children of
Cardassian soldiers and there '
comfort women'
, Jakanna
was shipped to Dashur Province shortly after his
birth. He doesn'
t know his father'
s name nor lineage
(I thought you might be able to use this later) and
was raised in the Bajoran way by a loving, if somewhat
underprivileged family (unlike most Cardassians, his
father did make sure some of the basics were offered to
this family covertly, so that they wouldn
't have to
bear the dual hardship of raising a half-Cardassian
child and potentially be labeled a collaborator as
well). He was barely 8 when the Cardassians ended the
Occupation, seeing firsthand the destruction and
wanton violence that were the trademark of the
Cardassian military. He felt somewhat ashamed by his
heritage because of this, and had plans to disappear
into the priesthood to devote his life to the Prophets
as atonement for some of the sins of his forebearers.
Then he met Lt. Alren Haddock, a Starfleet medical
officer, brought to Bajor by the Enterprise. Alren
was the first person (outside Jakanna
's family) that
didn'
t treat him like some kind of mistake or
abomination. He spent many long hours at the
makeshift medical relief station, asking questions
about the Federation and Starfleet.
This went on for about two years, until Lt. Haddock
and the rest of the medical team was reassigned. At
that point, Jakanna asked if Lt. Haddock could help
him join Starfleet. Haddock told him he
'd do what he
could, but Jakanna needed to take the entrance exam
himself.
When he turned 17, he took a shuttle to the place of
his birth, to take the entrance exam. He had studied
for six to ten hours a day since Lt. Haddock had left,
making sure he knew all the answers that might be
needed. He entered the testing with confidence and a
new level of self-respect. He failed to enter by one
question.
Not to be one to let defeat get the better of him, he
reapplied for testing that same afternoon. In a
month, he would be able to retake the test.
When he returned the following month, he managed to
not only pass, but this time he only missed one
question. He returned to Bajor, to his home in Dashur
provence, readied his things for the long trip to
Earth, and said good-bye to the only family he had
even known.
He entered Starfleet Academy at the age of 18, and
threw himself into his studies. He chose archaeology
as his specialty field, spurred on by the oral
traditions and ancient ruins he'
d heard of as a child.
He also had the notion that he would help find
B'
halla, the mythical city that had eluded discovery
for almost 20 millennia. Of course, the Emissary
found that instead of him, but he could think of no
better person to have found the city, all things
considered.
Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Intrepid Class
USS Marakesh, which was being assigned to Bajor
sector. He was positively thrilled by this turn of
events.
Jakanna has always followed Bajoran tradition and
customs, being raised as a full blooded Bajoran
instead of some kind of mistake. However, he has felt
the sting of being treated like some kind of
sub-intelligent lifeform due to his genetics. He
tries not to let that get in the way of his service
to Starfleet and the Prophets.
