Bio/History: Alistair T. Reynolds was born to a successful trader
family on the "Trader'
s Luck" an old Antares class vessel converted
into a kind of "mobile home" for the Reynolds family. He has spent
most of his life in space, and a lot of his time he spent learning the
in'
s and out'
s of the trading business. Until his first attempt at
applying to Starfleet Academy, he was bored to tears with the concept
of the corporate life. All he wanted, more than anything else, was to
take a ship where no one has ever been. The thought and concept of
exploration has always fascinated him. Even if the exploration brought
untold dangers and peril, he was willing to put himself at risk if he
had just ONE opportunity to see something that had never been seen or
visited someplace that had never been visited.
He'
s an avid free climber, and spends quite a bit of his off time in
the Holodeck, climbing places he could never climb otherwise (Romulan
landscapes are prominent). He also spends time studying the Ferengi
culture (based more heavily on a commercial ethic than ANY Federation
trade company) as a means of keeping him grounded. He hopes that
someday, he will see the Ferengi finally realize the folly of their
social system. He'
s not prejudiced against them, but they remind him
too much of his family to not keep an eye on them.
His family wasn'
t too pleased with his decision to join Starfleet. At
first. He has made peace with most of his family, except his sister
Deedra. He hopes to someday remedy the problem, which stems from her
feeling "abandoned" by Alistair when he joined the Academy.
His career in Starfleet has been exemplary, he even had an early taste
of command when his captain and xo were severely wounded in an incident
involving an old Cardassian minefield. While serving aboard the
Lantree, the vessel was skirting an old battle field in the Kolchis
system. Within a few hours of entering the system, the Lantree was hit
by a old Cardassian mine that had strayed from the borders of the field
as marked on the charts. He was the highest ranking officer left on
the bridge and managed to calm the NCOs and get the vessel out of the
area and to a nearby Starbase. It was that singular incident that lead
him down the path to Command.
He'
s very interested in joining the Marakesh
's crew, since he
's had a
chance to view the mission profile, especially since he
's getting a
chance to sit in the "big chair" on a permanent basis. The Solstice is
currently on layover at DS9 and Sector Command has given him the tap to
replace the former XO, who was killed in an explosion.
